Aire Serv® has tips for inspecting your home
WACO, Texas (April 9, 2014) – April is Home Inspection Month and taking time to identify and inspect areas in homes that require immediate attention will prevent increasing damage to the home. Aire Serv has tips to identify home inspection areas and address them before they become a serious and expensive problem.
Inspect the roof
Inspecting the roof from inside and outside of the home is important. When inspecting the roof from inside, look for places where the roof is sagging or has dark spots and trails, which may indicate water damage. Check for any light that is showing through the roof. When inspecting the roof from outside look for torn or cracked shingles, dark spots indicating water damage or standing water.
Check guttering and downspouts
Guttering should be properly attached to the house with downspouts directing water away from the foundation of the home. Guttering not properly attached to the home can cause water to drain off the roof and settle at the base of the foundation of the home, allowing water to seep into the home. Obstructed downspouts can cause water to back up and flow over the side of the guttering.
Check structural foundation
Walk around the homes foundation and check for cracks or bulging of the foundation. A foundation that is cracking requires immediate attention and a licensed home professional should be contacted.
Ensure proper water flow and drainage
Downspouts should direct water away from the home. A proper water flow channel should be established and kept free of debris. Ensure that soil is graded to slope away from the home. Flat ground will not channel water away.
Check for water leaks
Inspect ceilings and walls for signs of water damage. Stains, bubbling, peeling paint or wallpaper can indicate water damage. Contact a professional service provider if you see signs of water damage to prevent further damage and mold growth.
A proper home inspection should be conducted by a license professional but homeowners should check for damages from the winter months. Prevention is more affordable than treatment. Following these tips from Aire Serv will allow you to repair any minor problems before they become costly.
