Measuring vinegar for cleaning a humidifier

How to Clean a Humidifier (You Really Should!)

Humidifiers are known for making it easier to breathe and increasing the quality of the air in a home. Humidifiers are even known to help reduce the spread of germs during cold and flu season! However, if not well maintained, the benefits are negated.

Make the most out of your humidifier by following our recommendations for humidifier maintenance.

First, Why Is Humidifier Maintenance Important?

You might be surprised to learn just how gross a humidifier can be. Without proper humidifier maintenance, mold and bacteria will be spread throughout the home via moisture in the air. This may impact the health of those who live in the home and is especially dangerous for people suffering from illness, a compromised immune system, or asthma.

With prolonged exposure to contaminated air from a dirty humidifier, it’s possible to develop serious infections or even lung disease. Whether you have existing health challenges or not, it’s never a good idea to breathe contaminated air, which is one reason why cleaning the humidifier is vital.

Plus, ignoring simple humidifier maintenance may reduce your humidifier’s useful lifespan.

How to Clean a Humidifier in 8 Simple Steps

  1. Unplug for Safety
Unplug the base power cord from the electrical outlet before pouring out the remaining water in the base.
  2. Remove and Rinse
Remove and empty the device’s water tank and air filter, if applicable. Rinse the filter with cold water; then, gently towel dry to remove excess water and allow to air-dry.
  3. Clean the Tank with White Vinegar
Unscrew the fill cap on the tank and add one-half gallon of warm water plus two to three tablespoons of white vinegar. Screw on the cap and shake the tank vigorously for 30 seconds before allowing the tank to soak for up to an hour.
  4. Clean the Shallow Reservoir
Fill the shallow reservoir in the top of the base with a solution of half warm water and white vinegar and allow the base to soak for up to an hour.
  5. Shake & Drain Tank
Shake the tank vigorously for 30 seconds before removing the cap to drain out the water-vinegar solution.
  6. Rinse
Rinse the tank and reservoir with clean water.
  7. Scrub
Use a soft-bristled brush to scrub away any dirt or mold before pouring out the vinegar and rinsing the base again with clean water.
  8. Reassemble
Once clean, thoroughly dry all parts before reassembling the humidifier.
